Course description:
Cancer remains the second largest cause of death in the United States, causing one of ever four deaths in 2008. The past 50 years have seen significant advancements in the development of effective cancer prevention and early intervention strategies, and treatments, which can extend lives, a person's nutritional status plays an important role in maintaining the effectiveness of these treatments. Because nutritional needs change during cancer treatment and recovery, particularly during treatment with cytotoxic chemotherapy agents which negatively impact digestion, absorption and the body's use of food, dietitians can help patients improve. This article focuses on the important role that nutrition, especially protein, plays in making chemotherapy more effective.
